what is psychotherapy?

Everyone goes through challenging times in life that can impact negatively on mental health, cause anxiety and stress, and leave us feeling less like ourselves. Psychotherapy is an alternative term for ‘talking therapy’ or ‘counselling’, and can support people during difficult times by offering a professional, confidential relationship in which individuals can explore and work through mental health challenges or anxiety they are facing.

Speaking about one’s difficult experiences may feel vulnerable and nerve wracking, yet doing so can be a powerful way to access greater wellbeing, in a way that lasts. As a therapist I am aware of this not only from working with many clients, but also from going through the process of being a therapy client myself for many years. In therapy sessions, the client is always considered the expert in their own experience, and will be the gatekeeper of what is discussed and the pace at which they open up. As a therapist, I aim to approach the experiences clients choose to share with me with warmth and curiosity, fostering an environment in which clients feel safe to be and discover more and more of themselves.

Is psychotherapy for me?

People seek psychotherapy for a variety of reasons, and there is no right or wrong reason to do so. I believe counselling can be beneficial for everyone and can play a valuable role in helping individuals feel more whole, nourished, and at peace with themselves.

Some common reasons that people seek counselling are:

  • Feeling low, anxious, stressed or overwhelmed

  • Experiencing a lot of difficult emotions

  • Feeling ‘empty/numb’ or ‘stuck’ or that there is more to life

  • A desire to get to know oneself on a deeper level

  • A desire to understand and work through challenges in relationships

  • Low self-esteem, feeling ‘unworthy’

  • A desire to face and work through painful experiences from the past

If the reason you’re seeking psychotherapy is not on this list, please still feel free to reach out. This list includes only a few of the many experiences that psychotherapy can support.
